Organisation profile

Established in 1987, the Department of Applied Physics has experienced a rapid growth to be a world-class centre for research and education in applied physics. The Department has over 20 faculty members, 20 support staff, 40 research staff, 40 graduate students pursuing MPhil or PhD degrees and 300 undergraduate and sub-degree students. Our graduates have been serving the society in key positions and have made significant contribution to the development of Hong Kong in its evolution from an industrial-based to knowledge-based economy. We have over 30 laboratories with advanced equipment and facilities for supporting our teaching and research. We strive for excellence in teaching, research and professional services. Today, we have a young and dynamic team of faculty members with diverse educational background from top-notch universities over the world, dedicated to both teaching and research. Our major research areas include Nanomaterials, Photonic Materials and Devices, Smart Materials and Devices, and Theoretical and Computational Physics. Our faculty members published broadly in reputable journals including Science, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, Physical Review Letters and others. We have been awarded with over $50 million external research grants since 2008. Thanks to the efforts of our faculty members, researchers, and our alumni and students too, we continue to play a leading role in our discipline, both nationally and internationally.
