DescriptionOn Friday's Backchat, we discuss tourism trends and the mainland's Golden Week holiday, which ended Wednesday.

Immigration records show that --throughout the 5-day period -- 625,000 mainland visitors entered Hong Kong, a higher than expected figure which nevertheless remains below pre-COVID levels . The Travel Industry Authority -- which regulates travel practitioners and handles tour guide accreditations -- recorded 453 inbound tour groups, drawing 13,800 visitors.
Meanwhile, hotel rates soared to record high with increases of up to 540 per cent, before sharply dropping at the end of the holiday, on Wednesday.

Has the golden week marked the revival of Hong Kong's tourism industry? Have mainland visitors' travel habits changed? Are more visitors opting for same day returns rather than overnight stays?

How about neighbouring Macau? Have understaffed hotels managed to cope with the demand?
