DescriptionLabour and Welfare Secretary Law Chi-kwong said this week that the government could not keep funding the tourism industry, with no end in sight to the pandemic.

The government had offered at least HK$2.6 billion worth of relief measures for the tourism sector to cope with Covid-19.

Law also said the practical thing to do is try to help people working in sectors that are struggling to change jobs.

The statement sparked concern within the sector, as industry groups say they expect more travel agencies to shut down if the government rules out further assistance for the trade.

How’s the tourism sector doing? Why should tax dollars keep supporting it? Does it have a viable future?
