Description
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. In applied linguistics, we are particularly interested in applying a wide range of methods to address practical problems in language use, learning and processing. In this workshop, I will discuss the range of methods I used in the past 18 years to discover the many faces of formulaic expressions. These methods include discourse analysis, acoustic analysis, corpus linguistic analysis, one-to-one interviews, online surveys (internet crowd-sourcing), controlled experiments and software development. I will provide an overview of these methods, including their pros and cons, and points to note when executing these methods. The audience will be guided to consider their own topics of interest in applied linguistics and how they may apply the methods presented creatively to solve practical problems in their research projects.| Period | 11 Nov 2022 |
