Description
In an era of rapid developments in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology, many fields are facing significant challenges. Humanities scholars and educators are even asking whether their jobs will soon be replaced by AI. To meet these challenges, we must understand the merits, limits, and risks that modern technologies including AI have brought to our humanities disciplines, and to our society at large. In studying subjects such as language, culture, and history, we must take advantage of the features and affordances offered by AI and the latest technologies, so as to better examine the disciplines of our interest, to study the interaction between technologies and human users, to investigate how we can build better AI-empowered platforms to facilitate student learning, critical thinking, and human interaction, and to promote ethical and socially responsible use of AI and technologies. With these goals in mind, I illustrate how we combine AI and immersive learning technologies to understand human language learning and knowledge acquisition, along with studies of the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying successful or less successful learning processes. By comparing AI and human learners or instructors, we can gain insights into pedagogical designs that best suit individual needs in evidence-based, personalized educational contexts. By combining AI with VR/AR tools, we can also enhance the study of history and cultural tourism, understanding cultural heritages and promoting cross-cultural dialogues and communications. I conclude with discussions of our findings in behaviour, cognition and the brain in light of current scientific theories, technological developments, and humanistic perspectives.| Period | 7 Jan 2026 |
