AI-Powered Environmental Geodesy: Confronting Climate Impacts

Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk

    Description

Environmental geodesy stands at a transformative moment. The precise measurements that underpin global navigation are now revealing the fingerprints of climate change; from floods to droughts and wildfires worldwide. This presentation examines how the convergence of geodetic observations with artificial intelligence is reshaping our ability to respond to climate impacts.

We present AI-powered geodetic solutions addressing critical challenges. RecNet reconstructs GRACE water storage data, enabling continuous monitoring of transboundary river basins. Downscaled products captured precursors to the 2019 Iran floods. Machine learning enhances precipitable water vapour monitoring from GNSS for extreme weather prediction. An interpretable deep learning framework for dam displacement prediction achieves RMSE reductions. Additional work demonstrates AI-powered digital elevation model enhancement, landslide segmentation, and GNSS radio occultation infilling of African data gaps. A fire-smoke detection system integrates IoT sensors with geospatial intelligence. We address the path forward for China's geodetic community: How can BeiDou integrate with AI to enhance climate services? These questions define the frontier where geodesy confronts the climate crisis.
